Step 1 · Pick an option

Ten ways to spend 17–21 October

Options 1–4 all start with the same evening flight to Lijiang. There is no evening flight from Guangzhou to Shangri-La on 17 Oct (the only one leaves at 09:00, ₹22,281). Options 5–10 go elsewhere. Pick any option: the choices, the live quote, the day plan and the altitude chart all switch to it. The default picks for options 5–10 add up to the same verified totals as their booking checklists.

Your fair exit: 15:30. The cheapest Lijiang flight, China Eastern 17:40 → 20:35 (₹10,324), works. Check-in closes 40–45 min before departure, and Pazhou to Baiyun takes 35–80 min, so leave on time. Landing after midnight on the way back is fine for you, so the 23:00 return (₹14,338) is set.

What the snow desk found

Snow reality check

Mid-October is early in the season. At Jade Dragon you will see the glacier and snowfields, but you stand on a fenced boardwalk: snow underfoot is roughly a coin toss, and there is no free snow play. Satellite snow maps and 2024–25 reports back this up. The best natural snow you can actually touch without hiking is Dagu Glacier near Chengdu.

Lijiang · 2,381 m20.4° / 9.0°COctober mean high/low, 10.7 rain days (1991–2020 normals)
Shangri-La · 3,342 m14.9° / 2.3°CRecord low −11.1°C; 0.6 snow days in October on average
Glacier Park · 4,506 m≈ 0°C or below−2°C reported late Oct 2025. Fog can hide the peaks, and wind can close the cableway.
Biggest risk: October maintenance. The glacier cableway was shut on 20 Oct 2022, 12–22 Oct 2023 and 21–29 Oct 2024. The 2024 notice appeared only on 14 Oct. In 2025 the annual inspection moved to February (21–26 Feb), and no October 2026 notice existed on 29 Sep. Book refundable hotels and check lijiang.cn daily from 12 Oct. If a closure covers your dates, Chengdu + Dagu (4,860 m) is the snow backup.
Changed in 2026: the Yak Meadow cableway has been closed since 4 Mar 2026 (rebuild, until about 2028). Pudacuo's Bita Lake core area is closed until 31 Dec 2026. Anyone late for their Glacier or Spruce Meadow slot is moved to the 16:30–17:00 slot (rule valid to 31 Dec 2026). The glacier cableway allows one purchase per ID per 90 days.

Scams seen in Lijiang and Shangri-La

  • Tea-house or bar invitation from a "friendly local" with no prices shown. Decline, or photograph the menu first.
  • Cheap one-day tours that stop at jade, silver or tea shops. Book only listings marked "no shopping stops".
  • ¥199 photo shoots, Lashi Lake horse rides, fake Dongba fortune-telling. Agree a price before any photo with costumes or yaks.
  • Taxi touts at stations. At Songzanlin the official ¥10 car up is fine, but ignore touts selling a "long climb" ride. Use DiDi or the official rank.
  • Songzanlin "exhibition hall": a "teacher" asks your birth year and pushes ¥1,000–4,000 donations (Apr 2026 review). Walk away.
  • Mountain upselling: oxygen at about 4× town prices and marked-up "anti-altitude" drinks. Buy in Lijiang pharmacies.
  • Phone theft in night crowds on Lijiang's bar street. Old-town lanes are safe on the main routes; Dukezong side alleys are dark at night.

Before you fly

  • Passport always on you: hotels, trains and the glacier ticket all scan it. The name must match your booking exactly.
  • Shangri-La is open to foreigners without a Tibet permit (it's in Yunnan, not the Tibet Autonomous Region). Don't continue by road into Tibet.
  • Birthplace check: on 8 Dec 2025 India's MEA advised "due discretion" after an Arunachal-born traveller was detained in Shanghai.
  • Pay: link a Visa/Mastercard to Alipay; RuPay isn't accepted. There's a 3% fee on any single payment over ¥200, so split big bills or pay cash.
  • eSIM: Trip.com, 5 days × 1 GB/day, ₹199 (Google/WhatsApp route via HK). Download Amap (English), DiDi, and offline Chinese for Google Translate.
  • Altitude: never do the glacier on arrival day. Buy oxygen cans in town (¥10–20, not ¥39 at the base). Ask your doctor about Diamox. Descend at once if you get confusion, unsteady walking or a wet cough.
  • Pack: down jacket, fleece, beanie, gloves, sunglasses, SPF, non-slip shoes. Jacket rental at the base costs ¥30–50.
